Choir

The Choir of Panteion University was established in October 2014, initially as a project of the School of Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University, by Assistant Professor Charikleia Tsokani and conductor and singing teacher Giannis Vryzakis.

The aim was to create a polyphonic music ensemble within the University, composed of students with no prior musical training, without auditions and without any exclusion on the basis of musical skills.

The enthusiasm of the student choristers and the systematic working method soon transformed the ensemble into a contemporary mixed choir, which now represents Panteion University. The Choir gives independent concerts and musical tributes, and collaborates with other artistic and academic bodies, both within and beyond the University.

The Choir’s history includes many distinguished appearances. At Christmas 2016, it participated in the production of the original music-theatre work *The Horsey Name*, an adaptation of a short story by A. Chekhov, directed by N. Diamantis, with music by M. Zacheila and choreography by Angeliki Sigourou. The performance took place at the Russian Cultural and Scientific Centre.

In 2017, the Choir presented an extensive tribute to the music of the October Revolution, on the occasion of its centenary. Following invitations from political and cultural bodies, it participated in the international conference of the University of the Peloponnese on the October Revolution on 23 October 2017, as well as in the exhibition *Memory and Revolution – Contemporary Greek Visual Artists* of the Athens School of Fine Arts on 12 February 2018.

In March 2018, the Choir presented G. Minas’ work *Heroic Times*, based on poetry by Karyotakis (*Heroic Trilogy*), for choir and percussion.

In October 2018, the Choir invited the Greek-German Choir Polyphonia from Berlin, which performs exclusively Greek repertoire, and presented a tribute to Greek music, with joint concerts in Athens and elsewhere in Greece.

At Easter 2019, the Choir performed G. Fauré’s *Requiem* in collaboration with distinguished soloists and collaborators — Marilena Striftombola, soprano; Dimosthenis Stavrianos, baritone; and the instrumental ensemble Musica Raeda / D. Dimitriadis — at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Athens and at the Metamorfosi Conference Centre.

In July 2019, the Choir gave a joint concert with the Charité Berlin University Choir in the “Aristotle” Hall of Panteion University. At Christmas of the same year, it co-performed the Christmas portion of G. F. Handel’s oratorio *Messiah*, with soloists Sofia Papadimitropoulou, soprano; Kassandra Dimopoulou, mezzo-soprano; Filippos Modinos, tenor; and Dimosthenis Stavrianos, baritone, together with the Sinfonietta Hellenica Orchestra / G. Galanis, at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Athens and at the Metamorfosi Conference Centre.

During the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, the Choir continued its work within the framework of the activities permitted at the time, undertaking a digital collaboration with the Polyphonia Berlin Choir on music by M. Theodorakis. It also collaborated with the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra in a radio production and recording of carols by young composers, which were broadcast by the Second Programme and the Voice of Greece at Christmas 2020.

Giannis Vryzakis has been the conductor of the Panteion University Choir since its establishment in 2014.
